Clinical effects of acyclovir treatment in Herpes zoster

Abstract
Acute herpes zoster is common, especially among the elderly and in immunocompromised patients.
Acyclovir, a new antiviral agent has been found to be effective for infections caused by herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus. Twenty-five patients with herpes zoster were treated for five to ten days with continuously administered intravenous acyclovir.
Intravenous acyclovir significantly accelerated cutaneous resolution and reduced pain. Ages, presence of fever and duration of disease at entry were evacuated as factors influencing cutaneous improvement, but none of these factors had a consistent effect on resolution of zoster.
In spite of immediate effect of acyclovir on both skin healing and pain, 5 of 25 patients who were treated for just 5 days had exacerbation of pain when acyclovir was withdrawn. This suggests that a longer course of treatment may be needed for some patients.
Acyclovir was well tolerated and no adverse effects were observed.
